Avon Lake’s hopes for a seventh straight Southwestern Conference championship suffered a major blow Friday night as they dropped a 24-14 decision to the Brecksville Bees.  Three Shoremen turnovers and an inability to finish drives deep in Brecksville territory doomed the Shoremen.  The Bees’ quickness on defense made it tough to run the ball,  as the Shoremen ground game was neutralized for the first time all year.  Both touchdowns came on passes from David Winkel to Max Seipel, who had 155 receiving yards in the game.

Things started out well enough for the Shoremen, as they received the opening kickoff and gained a couple of first downs before punting to the Brecksville 16.  The Bees managed to get a couple of first downs themselves, but stalled at their on 40 and had to punt.  Seipel returned the kick 13 yards to the A.L. 28, and two runs netted just three yards.  On 3rd & 7, Seipel got a step behind Brecksville’s cornerback, outfought him for the bomb from Winkel, and broke free for a 69 yard touchdown.  Voloshen’s PAT made the score 7-0 with 28 seconds to go in the quarter.  Brecksville’s returner mis-handled to kickoff and was downed at the six yard line. On third down, Collin Lucas sacked Bees’ QB Tim Tupa for a sack at the five to force a punt.  The momentum was really starting to build for the Shoremen, but the punt bounced off Seipel’s pads & the Bees recovered.  Again, the maroon & gold “D” rose to the occasion, stopping Brecksville and forcing another punt.  This one rolled to the nine yard line, and on first down, Winkel was sacked in the end zone for a safety.  Brecksville returned the free kick to midfield.  This time, Tupa completed a couple passes, ran for a first down, and hit his brother Tyler with a 23 yard scoring toss.  The brothers hooked up again for the two point conversion and a 10-7 lead.  After a touchback on the kickoff, Winkel hit Quinn Cantleberry on 3rd & 8 for a first down.  Two plays later disaster stuck again as Collin Lucas carried for a nice gain over the right side, but fumbled as he was going down,  Brecksville recovered at the 42.  Tupa ran for a first down to the 32, completed a couple passes to the 14, then scrambled away from the pass rush and zigzagged his way through the secondary into the end zone.  The score stood 17-7 at the half.

Brecksville took the second half kickoff and moved out near midfield, but a sack by Kyle Kuhar forced a punt, which rolled to the A.L. four yard line.  The Shoremen marched to the Bees 11 yard line in 12 plays, as Winkel completed five straight passes.  But the turnover bug bit the Shoremen again as The Bees intercepted David’s pass at the 10.  The teams exchanged punts, with the Bees starting a drive from their 21 as the third quarter wound down. Tupa engineered an 11 play scoring drive on which he either ran or threw on every play, capping it off with a 15 yard TD pass to Austin Strnad with 8:25 to play. Winkel completed a couple of passes to reach Brecksville territory at the 48, then Seipel took a slip screen in the left flat, made a couple of guys miss, and raced to the Brecksville 4.  Three incompletions and a holding call left Avon Lake facing 4th & 14, and Winkel’s passes was batted down as the Bees took over on downs.  Brecksville went three and out, punting to their own 45 with 3:20 to play. The Shoremen moved to the 18 before a pass interference call on Brecksville put the ball on the nine.  Seipel scored from there on a perfectly executed bubble screen to make it 24-14.  The ensuing onside kick almost worked as the Shoremen jarred the ball loose, but the Bees recovered and ran as much clock as they could, punting into the end zone with under a minute to play.  Winkel was sacked on first down, and then completed a couple of passes to end the game.
