"Shoremen at the Next Level"

September 29, 2007

For the second week in a row, Ashland Senior RB Jon Schroeder racked up four rushing touchdowns in the Eagles 59-43 shootout with Mercyhurst.  Schroeder cashed in on runs of 17, 1, 1, and 4 yards to run his 2007 total to 10 TD’s – just 7 short of the school’s single season record.  Of course, Jon is the Shoremen’s all-time leading scorer.   Ashland is off to a great start at 3-1 in the tough Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic League.

In Saturday’s games:

·       Iowa wideout Trey Stross returned to action, pulling in a 33 yard scoring pass, but the Hawkeyes fell 38-20 to Indiana.  Hoosier receiver Andrew Means, like Stross a 2005 graduate of Avon Lake, snagged for balls for 43 yards.

·       Matt Kostelnik had 5 tackles and returned a punt 13 yards as Mount Union continues to demolish its opponents.  This week’s victims by a 62-3 count were the Heidelberg “Student Princes”.  (That nickname alone has to make recruiting a nightmare!)

·       Chris Rau managed nine tackles for Georgetown, but the Hoyas went in the dumper again losing 45-7 to Cornell.  I heard Chris lost some sort of bet with his sister.

·       Ian Pace, a classmate of Stross & Means, made his first start at tackle for Fordham.  He must have done pretty well as the Rams held off Colgate 34-31 in their Patriot League opener.
