2001 Avon Lake graduate Mike Medders was killed on September 24, 2008 in Iraq. The 25 year
old Army Captain died in a suicide bomb attack. Mike, a senior on the 2000 Shoremen football
team, was first team ALL-SWC, All-County, All-District, and All-State.
At the 2008 homecoming game, Mike was honored in a solemn pre-game ceremony. The Avon
Lake Police Color Guard presented the colors, in a show of solidarity with Mike’s dad, Elyria
police chief Mike Medders Sr. The combined bands assembled on the field, and with the entire
Shoremen nation standing at attention, The U.S. Army Honor Guard from Fort Knox, Kentucky
fired a 21 gun salute in honor of our fallen hero. Mike’s locker has been retired,
and his number 66 jersey will remain there as a permanent memorial.
